Messenger's Home Furnishings literally started from scratch when in 1993, Phil and Shelie Messenger, began researching locations and buildings for a new business in the Lawrence area of NE Kansas. After lengthy research and not finding anything able to meet the requirements for a building in which to operate a furniture and bedding store, the Messenger’s began looking at nearby communities to fulfill their plan. In late 1994, property in the "new" commercial area of South Ottawa was purchased and plans for a tailor made building with every detail taken into consideration for providing the best facility to offer home furnishings was put into place.
In the summer of 1995, the nearly twenty thousand square foot building was started and by the end of the year completed. Subsequently, a huge Grand Opening took place in May of 1996.
Where did the idea of home furnishings come from? In the blood as they say. In 1946, Phil’s father started his own furniture store in Southeast Kansas and continued to operate it until after Phil left for college. Never for a second thinking that he wanted to be in the furniture business, it took almost fifteen years of the corporate world (and a couple of children), to convince Phil that the most satisfaction comes from being self-reliant, knowing that success is clearly a result of the efforts you put into something. Additionally, working directly with the public, as many are not able to do, was exactly what he liked to do and found the most satisfaction in doing.
Every business constantly talks of price with little regard to value. Price, in and of itself, means nothing. In actuality, price alone can mean the least value in anything you ever purchase.
